Full Weglot support: remembers the language each person was browsing in when they subscribed, and sends their restock notification in that language, with the email text written once per language.
Records which language somebody was browsing in when they joined a waitlist, and sends their restock notification in that language.
How it works
- Weglot is a translation proxy: it rewrites the HTML of a page after WordPress has produced it. An email is not a page request and never passes through it, which is why Weglot on its own sends every notification in your original language however well the shop itself is translated.
- The language somebody was viewing is recorded on their row when they subscribe. Before each message is built the site is switched into that language, and afterwards it is always restored to the language captured before the first switch, never to the previous recipient. On a batched restock that distinction is what stops every later email inheriting the wrong language.
- Weglot identifies languages by short codes such as de, while WordPress switches by locale such as de_DE. The two are mapped before any switch, because passing a short code to WordPress does nothing at all and produces an email whose text is translated inside a template that is not.
- WooCommerce resets the locale to the site default partway through sending a customer email. That is suppressed while a send is in progress, otherwise it undoes the switch.
Setting it up
- Write the email subject, heading and body for each language in the fields in the add-on settings. There is one set per destination language configured in Weglot.
- Install the WordPress language pack for each language you sell in, under Settings and then General, so the surrounding email template is translated too.
- Check the translation status table. A cross means that language will receive the original text rather than a blank email.
- Test by switching the shop to another language, subscribing on an out of stock product, then restocking it.
Common questions
Weglot translates my whole shop, why not my emails? Because Weglot works on rendered pages. It sits between your site and the visitor and rewrites the HTML that goes past. An email is generated and handed to your mail server without ever passing that point, so there is nothing for Weglot to rewrite. That is what this add-on exists to fix.
Does this use my Weglot translation quota? No. The email text you enter here is stored on your own site and never sent to Weglot, so notifications do not count against your word quota.
Do I need the shared waitlist setting? No. Weglot translates output rather than duplicating posts, so each product already has exactly one waitlist. That setting exists for WPML and Polylang, which do duplicate posts.
Data and privacy
- One extra value is stored per subscriber: the language code they were browsing in. Nothing is sent to Weglot or to any other third party.
